HIKING AND CLIMBING IN THE CHIMBORAZO AREA
1. Location
Chimborazo is an extinct glaciated volcanoes located about 150km south- west of Quito. Chimborazo is the tallest mountain in Ecuador at 6.310m and for many years it was thought to be the highest mountain in the world.

It still retains the distinction of being the point on the earth's surface which is farthest from its centre; this is due to the earth's Equatorial bulge. It is higher than any mountain in the Americas north of it: McKinley is about 75m lower.
Chimborazo's reputation as such a high mountain led to many attempts on the summit during the 17th and 18th centuries before it was climbed by Whymper and the Carrels in 1.880.
Highway to the Ambato-Guaranda road. This crosses the pass between the two mountains with beautiful views of these and other major peaks. For the mountaineer, combining the hike with ascents of both peaks provides an exceptional experience.
